Tangy, creamy and coconutty, this RAW vegan coconut almond yogurt is so luscious and incredibly simple to make.

All you need is a toastie, warm place for the coconut & almond milk to get busy and get fermenting. I like to whip this yogurt recipe up, and incubate it in my Excalibur Dehydrator. You can also incubate the yogurt in an oven, in a crock pot or on top of a heating pad (yes…you can be unconventional even when you’re making yogurt!)

Yogurt is a fabulous way to give your body, and your tummy in particular, beneficial bacteria that aid in digestion and elimination. I love to eat fermented foods — especially yogurt.

I really love the consistency of Greek yogurt: the thicker, the better. But Greek yogurt is a dairy product, and I like to keep dairy to a minimum in my diet. So…off to the kitchen I went to experiment with coconut milk and almonds. And, voila! I discovered that it is surprisingly easy to make vegan yogurt without breaking a sweat!

The best vegan yogurt ever. And…it’s sugar-free too. Very delicious, give it a try.
Serves: 4

  • 1 can of organic coconut milk (full fat)
  • 1 cup of soaked, raw almonds (soaked over night)
  • 4 capsules of a probiotic (I use Metagenics Ultra Flora Balance – each capsule contains 15 billion live bacteria)
  • A warm place to incubate your yogurt (incubation temperature is 115 degree Fahrenheit)

  1. Pour the coconut milk into a high speed blender (Vitamix)
  2. Add the soaked almonds
  3. Turn the blender on high, and blend for 2 mintues
  4. Add the 4 capsules of probiotics, and blend once again for 30 seconds
  5. Pour the milk mixture into a glass bowl or big glass jar. Place a loose lid on top (you can use a cloth or make the yogurt in a ceramic baking dish with lid).
  6. Place the bowl or jar into a warm place set to 115 degrees Fahrenheit for 6 hours
  7. After 6 hours, the coconut and almond milk mixture will turn to tangy, delicious yogurt. If there is a thin skin on top of the yogurt, that’s ok, just stir the yogurt.
  8. Store the yogurt in a big glass jar with a lid. It will last up to 5 days.

If you are living completely sugar-free, this yogurt does not contain sugar. Serve with chopped nuts and toasted, shredded coconut instead of fruit. 
Do not incubate the yogurt in metal or plastic. Only use a glass or ceramic container.

    One could use the meat and water from a young coconut, in place of the canned milk, then this would truly be raw. Canned coconut milk has been heated to a very high temperature….I bet this would be great, just making that substitution….

    Good Day. Can you use any probiotic? also, do you heat your oven to 115 and let it sit in oven for 6 hours. I made it. but it did not get thick and is ok to put a little honey or maple syrup in it? Thanks for your time

      Hi Andrea, the probiotic I use contains Lactobacillus acidophilus and bifidobacterium lactis. However, for making yogurt the Lactobacillus acidophilus is the most important bacteria type to use. When I make the yogurt, I put the blended ingredients into a couple of small ceramic dishes, so that the liquid is around 2 inches deep. I then place a ceramic lid on top of the mixture, and pop it into my dehydrator set to 115 degrees Fahrenheit. At the end of 6 hours, the yogurt is on the liquidy side and it tastes tangy. As soon as it starts to cool it thickens up. When you store it in the fridge, it really thickens up. Question…did the probiotic that you used contain Lactobacillus acidophilus? With the brand of probiotic that you used, you might need to add more (every brand is different). I make sure to use at least 60 billion live bacteria (that’s 4 probiotic capsules for me). Also, there is a chance that the bacteria in a probiotic could have died off and are no longer active. That’s happened to me before. When you purchase probiotics, buy them refrigerated and store them in a refrigerator, too. The only way to make yogurt is to make sure that the bacteria multiply. One more thing…there is also a probiotic product known as a ‘yogurt starter’ sold in health food stores (it’s a powdered probiotic specifically designed to make yogurt). Hope that helps!
