8 Signs That Your Gut Needs Probiotics

I spent years suffering with unrelenting gut pain. But at the time, I never realized how abnormal it was. I just lived with it.

The abdominal pain creeped into my life, slowly. It started off as uncomfortable gas build-up in my belly that would cause pain for a day or two; then it would disappear. Then came a day when the pain settled in and wouldn’t leave — no matter how much gas I passed.

Day in and day out I had constant, burning pain in my lower left intestine. I would jump up and down hoping that I would release enough gas to reduce the pain. I would massage the area hoping to loosen-up the tissues. I tried stretching and belly-breathing. But in the end, my tummy only got angrier and angrier.

For 2 straight years I lived with constant fiery abdominal pain that kept me up at night. And, I didn’t know what to do.

Eventually, I went to see several gastroenterologists. I was tested for Celiac Disease; I was given a colonoscopy, barium x-ray and CT scan. I was told that there was nothing structurally wrong with my intestine. But, of course, there was absolutely no discussion about potential food allergies or using probiotics to solve my problem. I was given the impression that it was IBS, and there was nothing I could do.

At the time, 10 years ago, I had no idea what probiotics were! So, just living with the pain seemed like the only option. Crazy, huh? Solving my problem, and eliminating my gut pain was a simple solution away. But I had no idea what the solution was.

I wasn’t always a total wellness junkie. Before contracting Lyme Disease I was pretty oblivious to healthy food or healthy living. I ate cake for dinner, and socially smoked cigarettes and drank copious amounts of coffee. I rarely ate vegetables. It wasn’t that I didn’t like vegetables, I just couldn’t be bothered to cook.

I had a huge wake-up call in 2006 when I lost my health, completely. I could no longer ignore my diet and lifestyle. I had to radically change my life. And at this point, 7 years later, I’m eternally grateful for everything that I’ve learned.

I have almost regained my health, entirely. And, I’m going to do what ever it takes to protect my precious, re-found vitality.

So, back to probiotics…

What exactly are probiotics?

Probiotics are live bacteria. Your intestine is full of bacteria; in fact, there are over 400 different types of bacterial flora in your gut. This bacteria helps the gut to digest the food that your eat, and it helps to protect the gut from harmful substances. The bacteria in your intestine helps to support the immune system — your gut is the first line of defense against infections. So, it’s a great idea to make sure that you have enough beneficial bacteria in your gut.

A good way to inhabit your gut with beneficial bacteria is by taking probiotic supplements and ingesting foods that contain probiotics like yogurt, kefir, kumbucha and fermented foods like pickled veggies.

Where can I buy probiotics?

Probiotics are very easy to find in your local health food store. They can even be purchased in your local grocery store, if it has a health food section. Purchasing probiotics online is also possible. But make sure that the probiotic is shipped with an accompanying freezer pack — all probiotics need to be kept refrigerated or the bacteria die-off. There’s no sense in buying probiotics if the all the bacteria are dead — right?

What’s your favourite brand of probiotic?

My favorite brand of probiotic is Metagenics. I like to purchase the Ultraflora Balance and the Ultraflora Acute Care. The Ultraflora Balance contains both Bifidobacterium lactis and lactobacillus acidophilus. The Ultraflora Acute Care contains Saccharomyces boulardii, bifidobacterium lactis and lactobacillus rhamnosus.

I like to replenish my gut with a variety of different bacterial strains.
